What is Zumba®?

Zumba Fitness® is a calorie-burning, Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that has grown to become the largest and most successful dance-fitness program in the world. The program offers a variety of classes for participants of all ages and fitness levels.

What is a typical Zumba® class like?

Zumba Fitness® classes are different from typical aerobic classes. First of all, there will be little verbal cueing. Instead, your instructor will use visual cues like pointing or hand gestures. The music is predominantly Latin-based: samba, salsa, cumbia, merengue, reggaton, etc., with many instructors adding a little belly dance, Bollywood and hip-hop. Some instructors will also include some current or classic dance-pop.

Classes will start with one or two “warm up” numbers before switching to a calorie-burning, sweat-inducing pace. The tempo of the music will change several times throughout the class with intervals of faster and slower rhythms. There will likely be a few brief “water breaks” during the class so students and the instructor (they sweat just as much as you do!) can rehydrate. Dance moves will include a lot of forward-and-back and lateral side-to-side movements, squats and lunges, changes in direction, arm toning moves, and hip and booty shaking. Your instructor will end the class with one or two “cool down” numbers.

What ages can participate? Am I too old or too young?

Children age 10 & over may participate in regular Zumba® classes. And you are never too old, as long as a doctor has given you the ok to exercise. You can go at your own pace. And men do Zumba too!

How many calories will I burn at a Zumba® class?

Results differ from person to person and depending on  how much you exert yourself you could burn 800-1000 calories an hour.

What if I’m out of shape and I can’t keep up?

Zumba® classes are designed for participants of all ages and fitness levels, but a regular class is high-energy, so new students may have some trouble at first as they learn the steps and routines. Don’t get discouraged! Follow along as best you can and you’ll be keeping up in no time.

Can I just try one class to see if I like it?

Absolutely! Since we do not require any enrolment fees or contracts, it is easy for you to try out a class to see if it’s a good fit for you.

What should I wear/bring to class?

Wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing that you don’t mind getting sweaty. Wear court type shoes or dance tennis shoes (with a smoother tread) and non-marking soles. DO NOT WEAR the TONE UP SHOES. Bring a towel and lots of water. Bring energy and smiles!

How early should I arrive for class?

Please arrive 10-15 minutes early for class to ensure your spot.

How long until I see results?

Each person’s results will differ, but we recommend giving any program at least 6-9 months before you start seeing real changes.

When you start working out your body will go through a period of fluctuation. First few pounds you lose is water weight—this is not the real weigh loss and it’s not going to change your body significantly. Next, your body will start building muscles. At this point you may have started to lose body fat, but it won’t be significant losses, so you will still have a layer of fat over your muscles so your weight goes up and your clothes feel tighter. This is the point where people give up, and this is why. DON’T GIVE UP HERE! Your metabolism is changing and your new muscles start to use the fat as fuel and the weight starts to drop. This is when you start to see changes in your body.

Everyone is different. Some will see results in a short time while for others it takes longer. The key ingredients to a successful weight loss program are being CONSISTENT with your workout and your changing your eating habits. Just stick with it and you’ll see the results!

I’m just visiting the area, but miss my Zumba® classes back home. Can I take classes with you while I’m here?

Absolutely! We love meeting Zumba® fans from all over! Our Single Class/Drop-In program is great for out-of-towners that want to keep up with their Zumba® workouts. No contracts or long-term commitments required. Just stop by and join the fun.
